They have a communications problem, a departmental silo problem, or heaven help them, both. And if it's a silo problem, it is affecting everything they manage, everything they produce, and every person who comes and goes. Most companies respond by bringing in specialists. Safety brings in a safety consultant. HR brings in an engagement firm. Operations brings in a productivity expert. Each one moves their number. For a while. Then the number goes back up — or a different number goes down. Because here's what none of those specialists ever identify: you don't have four problems. You have one problem hiding in four departments. And it is costing you right now.
