It's probably on a poster in the break room. It gets implied in the Monday meeting, in the safety huddle, in the onboarding package. *We're like a family here.* And somewhere on your crew, someone rolls their eyes. Because they've been paying attention. They've heard the words before from someone who didn't mean them, couldn't back them up, or had no idea how to build what they were promising. So the words land hollow. Here's what companies get wrong about trying to build a "family" culture: they treat it like a statement instead of a result. You don't build a family safety culture by saying "we're a family." You build it the same way you build an actual family: through years of caring relationships, working through the hard conversations, expecting accountability that doesn't need a rulebook, and loyalty that kicks in automatically when someone needs it. Family happens because of supervisors. In this week's video, I get into what a real family culture actually requires, including the parts nobody talks about. Because real families aren't all warm words and team photos. Real families are messy, accountable, and fiercely loyal.
