# Your Supervisors Bring You Every Problem.

#### Or worse, they hide them until they become disasters.

 Build supervisory leadership skills.

Give supervisors the tools to succeed.

 Grow more long-term leaders.

## The Real Problem

Your supervisors come to you with every problem, or worse, they hide issues until they become disasters. Missed deadlines, team conflicts, uneven performance: everything either flows up to you or gets buried.

You promoted them because they were the best at their work. Then you changed their work, but you didn't change them. Now they're leading people without the skills to do it. They lack the confidence to make decisions, and they don't know how to coach their crews through problems.

The result? Problems that should be solved where they start end up on your desk. Your time goes to their decisions instead of yours.

## Here's What's Really Happening

Performance Varies Wildly Between Teams

Same work, same equipment, completely different results. Without people-skills, every supervisor makes it up as they go, and you get a different result from each one.

Problems Either Escalate or Get Hidden

Supervisors who lack confidence either bring you everything or try to handle it alone and make it worse. Neither one solves the problem.

Small Issues Become Big Ones

Information doesn't get passed along, small problems grow, and you spend your days putting out fires that never should have started.

## It's Not Just Your Problem

The supervisor bringing you every problem is the same supervisor your safety manager is trying to get buy-in from. And the same one your HR manager is trying to keep good people with. And the same one escalating problems to a mid-manager's desk.

Meanwhile, each department is working on fixing its own number. The number each department is responsible for. But nobody is looking at all of them together.

When you look at all of it together, you discover that the problem is one person who touches every one of those problem numbers: the frontline supervisor.

Fix the supervisor, and you don't move just one number. You move all of them.

## What Changes

1

**Problems Get Solved Where They Start**

Supervisors gain the confidence to make decisions with their crews instead of sending everything up to you.

2

**Crews Learn to Solve Problems Themselves**

Supervisors learn to coach so their people can handle issues without waiting to be told what to do.

3

**Small Issues Stay Small**

Supervisors learn to communicate clearly, so problems get caught and handled before they grow.

## Fewer Calls to Senior Management

Too many frontline issues at World Class Contracting were being escalated up to senior management to solve. After just a few weeks of the PeopleWork Supervisor program, the calls started noticeably dropping off.

CEO and Operations Manager Colin Mueller came in skeptical, because he's always been an in-person learner. His assessment after two groups: "The Academy was everything and more than we expected."

> I definitely see a lot better what motivates each of the individual members of my team. What each responds to. And so my communication style changes from one to the next. And it's just helping me be a better leader.

> This program helped me in being better planned and more prepared. And I've noticed much more engagement from my team.

> I'm already seeing our frontline leadership team starting to utilize some of what they learned. I'm especially noticing them communicating more with the employees on the floor.

## How It Works

For eight weeks, supervisors watch a short video lesson each day, under ten minutes long, and put it to use that same day. Once a week, they meet live for a one-hour coaching session with other supervisors to talk about how to be better supervisors.

For the 50 weeks after that, the learning continues with short videos twice a week: Monday Mentor on Mondays, and 52 Benefits of Safety on Fridays.

No classroom. No time off the job.

## Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from lean or other operational improvement programs?

Those focus on processes and systems. This focuses on the people who run those processes. You can have perfect systems, but if your supervisors can't engage their crews, you won't get consistent results.

What if our operational managers think this is too "touchy-feely"?

The results speak for themselves. Crews with better supervisor relationships have fewer problems, more consistent performance, and less escalation. When managers see problems getting solved where they start instead of landing on their desk, they quickly understand the value.

Can this help with shift handover problems?

Yes. When supervisors learn to communicate clearly, shift handovers become much smoother. Information gets passed along, problems get documented, and incoming supervisors know exactly what they're walking into.

Will this work with our existing systems?

Yes. It makes whatever systems you already have work better because your people carry them out with more consistency and care.

What if our supervisors are too busy?

The program was built for busy operations: under ten minutes a day, no classroom, nothing that takes them off the job. If your supervisors can't find ten minutes a day to get better at their jobs, that's worth looking at too.

What if our production schedules are too tight for any training?

First, this isn't training. It's coaching. And we designed it for under 10 minutes per day with no classroom time. Supervisors can learn during natural breaks in the schedule - shift changes, equipment downtime, or whenever it's convenient. No impact on production targets. And if your schedules are so tight that supervisors can't invest 10 minutes in getting better at their jobs, you've got bigger operational problems than training.
